A roundup of new Israeli songs released this week.
Some new Israeli songs we think you should know about this weekend. Buckle up…’cause we’ve got a whole lot of ’em this Shabbat shalom from MyIsraeliMusic.com!
1. Shiri Maimon – Ima (Mother)
Mazal Tov to Shiri Maimon, new mom to her third child, a daughter born on January 29, 2023. In honor of this special milestone, Shiri wasted no time releasing a new song saluting the brave moms of the world. “The song describes exactly how I feel these days”, Shiri wrote on social media. “I became a mother of three, do you understand? Cause I don’t. 🙂 How many tears do I hide… Every single one of them – a whole world unto itself. I have created a life.
The words describe the strength, the quiet power, the crises and our being a solid rock. Mothers.
I want to dedicate this song to you, the lionesses and heroines who sacrifice their bodies and souls to create miracles every day anew. Every mother – will understand.”
2. Redband & Odeya – Wanna Be Yours (Arctic Monkeys Cover)
Unexpected duet of the week #1: It’s pretty amazing how many artists collaborate with Redband, a wacky group of musical puppets. First, well, they’re puppets. Second, their lead singer only speaks and sings in English. In any event, they’ve created some pretty darn good music with some of Israel’s biggest stars. The latest is Odeya, who is quickly becoming a big deal in Israel. Problem is, it’s pretty hard to understand her in English. Comprehensibility aside, the new song is a nice cover of the “Arctic Monkeys” song, “I Wanna Be Yours”.
3. Arik Sinai & Rotem Cohen – HaShir HaZeh Nichtav Achshav Alayich (This Song Is Now Written About You)
Unexpected duet of the week #2: Two generations, one message: love is eternal. “This is a vulnerable love song that represents masculinity In its true strength,” the artists write, “to give up the ego in order to be able to truly love and understand that romance has no time and no place.” The song was written by Tal Segev, who brought the two men together: Arik Sinai, as a mature man who has always been considered a romantic; and Rotem Cohen, who has become the Israeli symbol of the “new romantic”. Want an English translation of the song. We’ve got you covered.
4. Mosh Ben Ari & Aviv Bachar – Ad She’yaavor Za’am (Until Anger Passes)
Unexpected duet of the week #3: Two great songwriters, one exciting collaboration. This is the first in a series of songs co-written by Mosh and Aviv, with a full album scheduled to drop in March. A special concert is planned for April 9 at Ampi Shuni in Binyamina. So if you like this song (and we think you will), get ready for many more!
Sarit Hadad – Mikol HaAhavot (Of All The Loves)
Who doesn’t love this classic song by the Idan Raichel Project from 2005? Originally made famous by Maya Avraham on Idan’s second album, the song remains a huge part of the Israeli soundtrack ever since. Sarit Hadad clearly loves it too, and decided to put her own spin on the song. Sarit: “A few years ago I sang it together with [Idan] Raichel as part of a performance and since then it has stayed with me. I always knew that I would make my own version of it someday. Two months ago Raichel and I met again and sang it together on the piano, and again I felt the same moment from a few years ago.
This time I decided you should hear it too… and it’s your turn to dedicate it to your loved ones.” Sing along!
6. Avraham Tal – Tzalakot BaAsphalt (Scars in the Asphalt)
Avraham Tal returns with a poignant and painful song, a straight look at current Israeli reality and complexity. As he explains it: “Did you know that during the destruction of the Second Temple, the Romans came outside the walls of Jerusalem, and just before breaking in, they realized that we would destroy ourselves in a civil war between us? So it was. They besieged the city walls for several months, we fought each other, and then in an instant they overwhelmed us. We still haven’t internalized the message and here history is repeating itself. When will we learn? We cannot win any battle as long as we are divided. Everything that is happening here now burns inside me. We must unite and become stronger as a nation, as people who want to live a quiet and safe life in our wonderful country.”
7. Shimon Buskila – Prachim BaShamayim (Flowers In the Sky)
Have we featured a breakup song this week? Well, now we have, albeit an upbeat one. Shimon Buskila, who keeps sounding better and better with each new song, delivers a new single called “Flowers in the Sky”. The song depicts an unrequited breakup, and the intense desire of all of us for love.
8. Victoria Hanna – Pich Im Pi (aka Birds and a Cherry)
Perhaps best known for teaching us the Alef-Bet in a fun and unusual way, Victoria Hanna is back. This time, she’s celebrating Chaim Nachman Bialik on what would have been his 150th birthday. Victoria arranges Bialik’s words into song as only she can. Would Chaim have approved if he was here to see it? You decide.
