Q. If you’ve turned on Galgalatz radio at any time over the past 25 years, which Israeli artist were you most likely to hear?
A. Mashina
In a previous post, we told you about the 30 Israeli songs that have received the most airplay over the 25 year history of Galgalatz (SPOILER ALERT: “Bo” by Rita and later Ivri Lider took the top spot). But in honor of the station’s 25th birthday, they also looked into which Israeli singers or groups have been most heard on Galgalatz over the years.
Mashina took the #1 spot. Not bad for a band that was broken up from 1995-2003!
Here is the complete list of the Top 20:
- Mashina
- Shlomo Artzi
- Ivri Lider
- Arik Einstein
- Aviv Gefen
- Idan Raichel
- Ehud Banai
- Barry Sacharof
- HaChaverim Shel Natasha
- Shalom Hanoch
- Yehudit Ravitz
- Yehuda Poliker
- Assaf Amdursky
- Mosh Ben-Ari
- Gidi Gov
- Evyatar Banai
- Rita
- Kenessiat HaSechel
- Dudu Tassa
- Monica Sex
So, what can we learn from this list?
Once again, Yediot Achronot noticed some interesting trends:
- Only two women – Yehudit Ravitz and Rita – cracked the top 20, while the highest ranked woman was Yehudit Ravitz at #11. Galgalatz has been criticized over the years for its male-dominated playlist, and this list seems to drive that point home.
- Mediterranean music, which has exploded nationwide over the past 25 years, is noticeably absent from this list. While artists like Sarit Hadad, Eyal Golan and Moshe Peretz have enjoyed unbelievable careers over the past 25 years, their music seems to have been under-played on the Galgalatz airways. While only the top 20 were published, Yediot Achronot reports that Eyal Golan came in at #25, and Sarit Hadad was at #29.
Which artists would you have liked to see on this list? Do you feel that the Galgalatz playlist is a fair reflection of Israel’s musical tastes?
